Statehouse Reporter, The Casper Star-Tribune | August 2018-March 2021
Coordinated all of the Casper Star-Tribune’s statehouse and political coverage for the state’s only daily, statewide newspaper. In addition to daily news coverage and meeting stories, also wrote issues-oriented enterprise pieces and profiles, and contributed to a number of award-winning special sections. During my time, built a reputation for even-handed and detailed policy coverage as well as numerous political stories that garnered national audiences. Also served as chairperson for the editorial department’s union, the Casper News Guild.
Managing Editor, The Ithaca Times | October 2016-August 2018
Managed a small staff of three staff reporters and 20 freelancers, coordinating story assignments and sources. Oversaw the production and layout of a weekly print issue each week as well as numerous special sections. Responsible for 3-5 bylines each week ranging from subjects including science, health, politics and entertainment, including occasional cover stories. Maintained community relations and acted as chief public relations representative for the newspaper including occasional radio show appearances and speaking to classes at local institutions of higher learning. Attended industry conferences on the paper’s behalf. At 23 years old, youngest managing editor in the alt-weekly’s 45-year history.
City Hall Reporter, The Ithaca Journal (USA Today Network/Gannett) | June 2015-October 2016
Was the chief city hall and town hall correspondent for the Ithaca Journal, Ithaca, New York’s daily newspaper. Areas of coverage included covering the administration of one of the nation’s most prominent mayors, the administration of a New York State superintendent of the year, and the operations of a major university (Cornell) and college (Ithaca College.) In addition to these duties, also chiefly responsible for the paper’s political coverage, and wrote numerous stories on sophisticated scientific and environmental subject matter.

Was recognized for numerous stories written throughout 2019, including a share of a second place win for in-depth reporting with an investigation into a mysterious group working to kill gaming regulation efforts in Wyoming, both first and second prize for government issue reporting for my national and state political coverage, and first place for Outdoors/Environmental Reporting for a piece I did on Sen. John Barrasso’s endangered species act reform efforts. Was also a finalist for Journalist of the Year.

Part of the team that won first place awards in Wyoming and Colorado for our special section on the 20th anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s murder in Laramie.
Particular interest in organic community development, workforce development and education, urban planning, and state-led community grant funding programs.
Interests include the interactions between state and local budgets, intangible inputs into state and local economies, and the politics of finances.
Specialties include rural infrastructure and global and domestic trade issues.
Have covered numerous state-level campaigns in Wyoming and New York, with a focus on covering politics as “an insider, writing for outsiders.”
